Trauma Informed Awareness - Women's Self Defence Seminar

"Overall, I found this course to be very informative and eye-opening.  As a woman, I would recommend this course to my colleagues and friends; and consider having this course offered at my workplace.

The final quiz and competition made the afternoon fun - and made me more aware of my surroundings!"

"I’ve done this seminar recently and can attest to it being very eye-opening and useful for women everywhere. If you’ve never done a self-defense class (or even if you have), this one is the one you want to do. Unfortunately the world is a scary place nowadays, but this course will help you feel more comfortable navigating it as a woman."

Knife Defence Seminar at Clarington Martial Arts

Here is what Coach Geoff Kirkland, from Clarington Martial Arts had to say.

"Hi Sifu/Kru Mark,

I wanted to follow up with a real heartfelt 'thank you' for the tremendous work you and your team put in yesterday (Feb 2, 2025). It was truly an honour to share our space with you, and the students all left with valuable lessons. I recognize this is quite a ways out, but we were planning to invite you back.

There were a couple of things that struck me yesterday that I wanted to share with you.

First off, I really appreciated that you included the first aid component, as well as the mental and emotional aspects in the days and weeks following an attack. The work you are doing with T4TCS is important, and its certainly an unavoidable part of self defense that many facilitators leave out.

Second, I felt that you way you paired the progression of technical intensity with an escalation of sensory input to be really impactful. Adding in layers such as physical obstacles, background noise, and unknown duration rounds really helped to up the ante for the athletes, and made the training feel even more authentic."

Head Instructor from Brooklin Martial Arts

Hello sir,

"This is Jean-Luc from Brooklin Martial Arts. I just wanted to reach out and say thank you and the team for the amazing seminar on Sunday. I really appreciate your approach to self defence training. Very professional, open and supportive of the participants given these self defence topics can be heavy. Master Kirkland encouraged us to come and I am so glad that we did.

I also wanted to thank you for how you supported one of our students. I really appreciate it. She is a very keen student, always jumping in every learning opportunity that comes up. We have been working on building up her confidence and self regulation in training. I really appreciate your efforts in helping support her on Sunday. I checked in with them tonight and they said they had a very positive experience. The whole team did. Thank you again. I hope to train and learn from you and the team again in the future."

February 23 2025 - Trauma Informed Seminar

Here is what Amanda, had to say after our 4-hour Trauma-Informed Awareness Self Defence Seminar

I just finished a 4-hour trauma-informed awareness women's self-defense seminar with T4TCS and to be completely honest I didn't even know what I was walking into but I knew I wanted to do this being a sexual assault survivor, growing up in a mentally abusive house, and being in mentally/physically abusive relationships I carry so many mental health issues, triggers, etc.

I was nervous about being vulnerable and even attempting to open up about what might come out. From the moment I was in this class, the atmosphere, and how they make you feel comfortable; right away I knew I was going to learn something great. Being taught this seminar by men is a huge healing process for me when it comes to male wounds inside myself.

I highly recommend coming to this seminar and learning how to protect yourself on top of understanding what trauma does to your mind, body, and soul. It makes you feel like you are not alone and leave feeling confidence in yourself. I can't wait to take the next one and encourage women everywhere to fight through the fear of healing these kinds of things; no matter the amount of time that has past or even if its recent. They respect your space, and your vulnerability and want to see you succeed in this seminar.

Avoiding healing your triggers isn't healing. Learning how to handle and protect yourself with them, is life-changing. As a woman, this program is a must for ANYONE! Being aware before anything happens is half the battle, I wish I had this as a teenager; I probably wouldn't have been in any of my situations.

To say I'm grateful is and understatement, can't wait to learn more.

598 Sabre Squadron Review

From the 598 Sabre Squadron Training Cadre

"Dear Eric and Team,

On behalf of the cadets, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for the incredible presentation you delivered. It was truly engaging, and the cadets were captivated throughout. Your openness and willingness to share your experiences deeply resonated with them, and they were genuinely touched by your talks.

The self-defense segment was a particular highlight—many of the cadets mentioned they could have done that for hours! It was clear how much they enjoyed it and how valuable the hands-on experience was.

Once again, thank you for your time, energy, and expertise. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and your team back again soon!"

April 12th 2025 - Stick Fighting Seminar with Mark Medeiros and Rene Cocolo - Training at Taylor Jiu Jitsu

Make stepping out of your comfort zone a habit, for reward and adventure.

Recently, I participated in a four hour Stick Fighting seminar that ended up being much much more than about martial arts by the end of it. For me, it ended up being about courage and resilience. I have a renewed sense of vigor and wanting to take on the world, and this is why...

First, some context: Since stepping aside from Social Focus Consulting, I've filled much of the time focusing on my health which includes Filipino Martial Arts (aka FMA). FMA was employed by ancient Filipino tribespeople to defend their homelands and has become a weapons-first combat art taught around the world. It uses sticks, as an impact weapon and as a proxy for edged weapons such as swords, and knives to teach techniques. As you progress, you learn the same techniques but empty handed.

Doing FMA is a fun way for me to add on to my typical gym routine. I can get bored easily, but the vastness of learning in FMA is one of the reasons that attracted me to the art. Another reason is my heritage. Lastly, I love the challenge inherent in FMA. I used to watch, in awe, videos of people swinging sticks at one another while the other person skillfully defends themselves. I never thought I could be coordinated enough to do that, until one day, I told myself to try. And I'm so glad I did.

Forward about one year later from first picking up sticks to participating in my first sparring match which was way overdue. It's one thing to learn drills and forms. It's another level to test out those skills against an opponent who is hitting you back. This was a huge mental and physical hurdle for me, but thankfully I had an experienced opponent that gave me enough challenge to show me what sparring is like while not doing anything to dissuade me from continuing. This was in December 2024 and ever since then, I've been hooked on FMA sparring.

In March of this year, I learned of a Stick Fighting seminar which would be led by a Dog Brother, Rene Cocolo. While part of me was excited, another part of me felt fear and apprehension. Dog Brothers is a fighting organization that was born from FMA'ers who wanted to test their skills with minimal protection. Think of the movie Fight Club but with sticks or other weapons. Traditional FMA sparring gear is a helmet and a fully padded outfit from neck to thighs. When wearing full protection, however, you often find combatants just wailing at each other continuously (we call it mutual destruction) as one doesn't learn to fear the pain from the stick. This prevents true skill expression. The Dog Brothers wanted to change that.

With this intensity in mind, I doubted whether I should join the seminar especially since I was nursing an injury from January. I stopped doubting and decided to say "yes." And I'm so glad I did. Rene did a great job of ramping up the effort, starting with a simple contact drill, and ending in multiple full-on hard contact matches with people punching, kicking, and stick swinging at me while I did the same to them. Toward the end, I was physically spent. I keeled over completely out of breath and sat down on the mats, but Rene encouraged me to keep going. He said that fighting when you have nothing left in the tank is one of the best ways to learn because it teaches you efficiency. I got back up.

Me in black hoodie/pants, doing hard contact stick sparring with a very experienced martial artist. We're doing an exercise called "puppets" whereby a 3rd party steers and controls my opponent, learning to deal with circumstances beyond our control.

The second half of the seminar was with Mark Medeiros, a specialist in using sticks as a grappling and submission tool. Prior to this seminar, I had near zero grappling experience, but I had awesome training partners that guided me through it. The experience was so positive that I definitely want to learn more grappling.

I left the dojo that day hobbled. My injury came back but worse. My back ached. My neck was sore. I found bruises on my arm. What I gave up in physicality, though, I more than got back in mental and spiritual awakening and toughness. I learned that my own mind, no one else's, is a rate limiting factor. The key was stepping out of my comfort zone and I was rewarded with a mindshift, adventure, and a memory to last a lifetime.
